Besenyszög

Besenyszög is a town in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county , in the Szolnok district .

History

The village got its name from a watercourse called Besen. This name preserves the memory of the Pecheneg people. The area was already inhabited during the Neolithic period. Today’s settlement developed between 1771 and 1774 from four destroyed medieval villages. In 1944 , due to the proximity of Szolnok, the border of the village was the scene of significant military events. Some of the houses in the village still retain the sawn-gabled character of old folk architecture without a porch.

On May 25, 2011, the runic place name plate of the settlement was inaugurated.

The late Baroque Roman Catholic church was built between 1783 and 1986 on behalf of Bishop Károly Eszterházy of Eger , based on the plans of József Francz . The late Baroque style ceiling of the sanctuary was built around 1790.

The Baroque main altar was created by sculptor Antal Steinhauser , and the altarpiece created in 1787 was painted by Károly Huszár, an painter from Eger. The tabernacle of the main altar and the benches are 18th-century Baroque works, while the pulpit was made in the Classicist style in the first half of the 19th century . The present altarpiece was painted by the city-born painter Ferenc Chiovini, a Munkácsy Prize-winning painter, entitled: John the Baptist Baptizes Jesus.
