Bridge of Holes

Belgium

The bridge Tournai holes is an ancient bridge of Gothic style, built in the xiii th  century, flanked by two towers and spanning the river Scheldt at Tournai in Belgium . The central arch was blown up at the start of World War II . During the reconstruction after the war, the two intact arches were dismantled then the whole was rebuilt to new proportions – partly with the materials of the historic arches – to widen the central arch, and the whole bridge was been raised by 2.40  m to facilitate river navigation, while preserving what defined the structure as a medieval water gate.

In 2019, the three arches are again “deconstructed” to increase the navigable gauge in order to promote river traffic and should be reconstructed again, by reusing the stones of the previous arches, by enlarging the central arch again (therefore in reducing the other two arches).
