Bridgetown Abbey

Ireland

Bridgetown Abbey, was a 13th-century Augustinian monastery of the Canons Regular of St. Victor.

Its ruins may be viewed in CastletownrocheCounty CorkIreland near where the River Awbeg meets the Blackwater.

It was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540.

Near the village of Castletownroche, just 15km east of Mallow, County Cork, visitors can explore the remains of a 13th-century Augustinian priory, including cloister, kitchen, refectory, chapter house and church.

Alexander Fitz Hugh Roche established the settlement and organized its buildings in a traditional quadrangle. By the end of the century, the monastery was also the primary burial place of the Roche family. In 1540, however, it was dissolved by Henry VIII.

Over the past number of years the site has undergone extensive restoration efforts, and today, it can be visited all year round.
