Casa Museo Lodovico Pogliaghi

Italy

Lodovico Pogliaghi was born on 8 January 1857¹ in Milan by the railway engineer Giuseppe Pogliaghi and Luigia Merli, both belonging to rich and distinguished bourgeois families of the city. He attended the Liceo Parini in Milan and then enrolled at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a pupil of Giuseppe Bertini (Milan 1825 – 1898).

Fantasy, ease of execution, order and deep dedication characterize the work of the painter, sculptor, architect and set designer Pogliaghi. Alongside his early religious and historical paintings – as well as the restoration and decoration of noble residences – he soon joined sculptural production, an area that was most suited to him. It is also applied with great finesse and elegance to graphics, glyptics, goldsmithing and glass art.

The Lodovico Pogliaghi House Museum is located on the Sacro Monte di Varese, near the last station, and is accessible from the Viale delle Cappelle. The entrance gate is located in front of the Montorfano Restaurant.

If you have a private vehicle, you can reach the Sacro Monte di Varese along the A8 motorway (Milan-Lakes) and then take the Varese exit following the tourist signs indicating Sacro Monte. Otherwise you can exit at Buguggiate and go up towards Varese from Schiranna. Visitors can leave their vehicle at the parking in piazzale Pogliaghi (parking in the blue line for a fee. Parking meters only accept coins).

Otherwise it is possible to reach the House Museum by public transport . From Milan you need to take a train on the Milan-Varese-Laveno or Milan-Varese-Porto Ceresio line . From the railway stations of Varese you can take the buses of the urban line C (in Varese stop Maspero – Kennedy FS / FNM, at Sacro Monte stop Piazzale Pogliaghi). On Sundays and holidays the funicular from Prima Cappella is active seasonally .
