City of Živinice

Živinice – from Medieval Fortresses to a Modern Town

Živinice, located in the heart of the Tuzla region, have a rich history that stretches from the Illyrians, Celts, Greeks, and Romans to the Slavic tribes who settled here in the 7th century. Although first mentioned in the 18th century, numerous medieval fortresses and stećci (medieval tombstones) bear witness to much earlier habitation.

The Municipality of Živinice was officially established in 1959. Today it covers an area of about 300 km² and is home to approximately 75,000 inhabitants. With strong development and a population that has nearly doubled compared to the pre-war period, Živinice has grown into an important urban and economic center of the region.
