De Goudse Practice Medical Center

In the 1920s, the Kadebuurt in Gouda was still under development. In 1930, the municipality commissioned architect H. de Meer to design a building for the Goudse Praktijk school. De Meer designed it in the style of the Amsterdam school.

The school building, known as the Kadeschool, is set up as a straight corridor school with seven classrooms in two layers. At one end was the entrance with service areas; at the other end, in the building mass that stands at right angles to the corridor school, were the practice rooms and an auditorium. In terms of architectural style, this building is characterized by its strikingly high roofs with protruding gutters and the varied design with strong horizontal lines, interrupted by vertical elements.

The windows of the Kadeschool were designed in accordance with the ideals for a school at the time: they are large, which gives the building a lot of light. Most special, however, is the main entrance with staircase. This is where the characteristics of the Amsterdam School style really come to the fore: the facade of the corridor side curves in a flowing line towards the protruding semicircular staircase at the end of the building. At the top, a window runs around a party that provides a beautiful illumination of the stairwell. The shape of a deer is depicted in the ornamental masonry on the right side of the entrance doors.
