Espoo

Espoo is a city in Uusimaa , in the Helsinki metropolitan area, on the shores of the Gulf of Finland . The cityscape is dominated by detached housing and suburban environment, and the city itself is know for its large natural areas, inclung its long shoreline—almost 60 kilometres in total—and the archipelago, forests, lakes and a national park.

There are several lakes in the northern part of Espoo, the largest of which are Bodominjärvi , Nuuksio Pitkäjärvi , Pitkäjärvi , Loojärvi , Velskola Pitkäjärvi , Saarijärvi , Matalajärvi , Siikajärvi and Lippajärvi . In total, Espoo has 73 lakes of at least one hectare. 

Culture 

Espoo’s official cultural offering is the responsibility of the Culture Business Unit, whose service areas are the City Library, the City Museum, the Tapiola Sinfonietta City Orchestra and event and cultural services. 

The cores of Espoo’s art life are located around the city:

  • Espoo Cultural Center in Tapiola (library and concert hall)
  • The WeeGee House in Tapiola houses the Espoo Museum of Modern Art Emma , the Finnish Clock Museum, the Espoo City Museum and the Finnish Toy Museum Leikkilinna. The Helinä Rautavaara Museum, which was also previously located in the building, has moved to the Entresse shopping center in the center of Espoo in 2019.
  • Akseli Gallen-Kallela Museum in Tarvaspää
  • Finnish Nature Center Haltia in Nuuksio.

Tapiola hosts the annual Espoo Ciné film festival and the April Jazz music event . Kivenlahti Rock is held annually in Leppävaara . The Serena Water Park hosts Pacifique spa parties in winter. During the summer, the Espoo Cathedral hosts the concert series Organ Night and Aria , part of the Finland Festivals chain of events . Ropecon, Finland’s largest and Europe ‘s largest independent role-playing event, has been held at Dipol since 1998 .

Espoo City Theater is located in Tapiola. In addition to the Revontulihalli, the stage for our own productions located on Revontulentie, Finnish and foreign guest performances will be seen in the Louhisali of the Espoo Cultural Center.

Authors from Espoo and living in Espoo include Antti Hyry and Mauri Kunnas . Arto Paasilinna, an expert in comic storytelling, was a distinctive prose writer from Espoo. In his novels, Tapiola and Haukilahti appear in Elämä short, Rytkönen long , Otaniemi in Aatami and Eeva and Jorvi in Herranen aeg .

Food culture 

In the 1980s, cod potatoes , a fisherman’s herring pan and Anna’s cake were named Espoo’s parishes . Overall, the meal was taken into account in Espoo manor dinner, including meat broth and cheese bars, roast veal with cream sauce, cooked peas, pickles , ice cream and cooked strawberries. 

Services

Education 

The Otaniemi campus of Aalto University is located in Espoo , where all six universities of the university have been operating since February 2019. The city also has the office of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (former Espoo-Vantaa University of Technology) and the local units of Laurea University of Applied Sciences . The Juvenalia Music College is located next to the Sello shopping center . The Espoo Cultural Center also houses the Espoo Music College .

Health Care 

Jorvi Hospital is located in Karvasmäki , Espoo , which cooperates with the University of Helsinki and belongs to the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS). There are a total of ten health stations responsible for Espoo’s municipal health care.
