Espoo Cathedral

Espoo Cathedral is the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church , Espoo Diocese Cathedral and two parish that is, Espoo Cathedral parish and Esbo svenska församlingenin home church . The church is located in Pappilanmäki, Kirkonmäki, in the center of Espoo, on the banks of the Espoonjoki River. The medieval greystone church is generally considered to be the most important historical building in Espoo, and a municipal publication defines it as “the most important single site in Espoo in terms of building history and landscape”.  The Church is dedicated to the Apostle Matthew.

Environment

Espoo Cathedral and the surrounding Kirkonmäki are included in the nationally significant built cultural environments inventoried by the National Board of Antiquities . The church was built in a traffic-friendly location: both the Kirkkojärvi and Espoonjoki waterways and the important land fairway, the Great Beach Road , were nearby . In 1458, the location was central to the independent parish.

Belfry

The present separate belfry was completed in 1767. Its lower part is made of stone and the upper part of wood. Tapuli watches were cast in Stockholm , the largest in 1765 and the two smallest in 1736.

The church cemetery

The cemetery around Espoo Cathedral is about eleven hectares in size and has been expanded five times. A delivery chapel has operated in Kirkkimaa since 1976. The historic cemetery is in the immediate vicinity of the church and next to the door on the side of the belfry is a monument to the deceased in Karelia. The cemetery has its own section for war veterans and hero tombs.
