The monumental baroque fountain at Praça da República do Alandroal, known as Fonte das Bicas, was erected in the early 18th century, to take advantage of the large amount of ground water that can be captured in the village and its surroundings.
The water from many springs in the area was considered to be of high quality, with even thermal properties attributed to it. It is located in the central square of the village, where fairs and markets are held, the center of all community life.
The fountain is composed of a parallelepiped box, with a marble front. The frontispiece is divided into three vertical panels through the use of pilasters, the ends of which are topped by urns and stoves. The pediment consists of a central 19th century coat of arms, displaying the royal arms topped by a closed crown, and flanked by two busts on the central pillars of the frontispiece. The busts, crowned with laurel, bear the inscriptions HIC MARIS ORA DEUS PANDIT REGNATOR AQUARUM. TANTALIA UT FUGIAT PECTORAE DIR SITIS and HUC LACRIMAT THETIS: UT FLORAS SITIBUNDE VIATOR. ILLA UT TU RIDEAS, BIBE, LUGIT AMANS .
The tank, also of rectangular shape, extends along the front and is fed by the water tank, located at the bottom of the box, and poured by six spouts. The set has an attached drinking fountain for animals, and is flanked by a paved floor surrounded by high walls with stone benches, which are accessed through four steps. The spouts protrude from six heads of lions, to which tradition names the spouts of witches, spouts of Santo António, spouts of lovers, spouts of kings, spouts of São Pedro and spouts of São João.
