Former Mons slaughterhouses

Belgium

The slaughterhouses of Mons ( Belgium ) were built in 1855 along a river called the Trouille . At that time, there were fish tanks there and the district was called Quartier de la Pêcherie before taking the name of Quartier du Grand Trou Oudart in honor of a fishing family. The building was listed in 1985 and opened to the public in 2006 after renovation. It then received the name of Anciens Abattoirsand has since been a place of heritage for contemporary art. It hosts events throughout the year as well as temporary exhibitions mainly devoted to contemporary plastic creation. The site is divided into three parts:

  • the Grande Halle, which hosts temporary exhibitions, extends over a single level, 70 meters long and 10 meters wide;
  • the Stable, which houses the World Craft Council Francophone Belgium non-profit organization , is dedicated to applied arts and presents creative crafts in all its forms (ceramics, jewelry, glass, lighting, etc.);
  • the Fridge, composed of a catering area and another dedicated to Digital and Sound Cultures, is managed by the Interdisciplinary Center for Digital and Sound Cultures Transcultures (it is also the headquarters of the City Sonic International Festival of Sound Arts ) .
