Tour suggestions for groups

Sometimes you need some inspiration for the perfect tour for your group so here you have a list of the most popular themes. Our guides are great story tellers with a comprehensive knowledge about Odense and Fyn’s history.

Dear Guest,

we have collected some tour suggestions for you to use as inspiration when you consider a guide tour with VisitOdense. The suggestions can of course be combined and/or changed to fit your preferences. The links in red will lead you to more information.

The Hans Christian Andersen Museum
At the Hans Christian Andersen museum, the guide will take you through Andersen’s life; from his childhood in poverty in Odense to his adult life, where he felt at home in many of the Danish castles and manor houses.
We will follow him through his life in Copenhagen, his struggles during his school years in Slagelse and his start as a writer. The guide will show some of the original items on display, from his paper cuts to different of Andersen’s old belongings.
After the museum tour, the tour will take you to the writer’s birthplace. This famous yellow corner house shows the living conditions in a poor neighborhood at the beginning of the 19th century.

In the Footsteps of Hans Christian Andersen
A walk in Hans Christian Andersens footsteps does not only focus on the famous writer but covers the interesting history of Odense.
Depending on your guide, the tours may vary, but it will always cover the following topics:

  • Walk along the Odense River through the beautiful park, H.C. Andersen haven/Eventyrhaven, where you will see the statue of Hans Christian Andersen and walk to the washing site, where Andersen’s mother used to clean laundry for a living.
  • The tour takes you through the cobbled streets of the historic quarter, where we see The Charity School, Andersen’s birth home and the sculpture of Thumbelina, one of Andersen’s fairy tale characters. You will also see a statue of the writer himself, sitting on a bench at the small square, Sortebrødre Torv, surrounded by colourful houses.
  • If the gothic Cathedral is open, the guide will show you the beautiful hand carved triptych, tell the story of the last Viking king King Canute the Holy and the plaque memorialising Hans Christian Andersens confirmation.

In 1805, when Andersen was born, this trendy neighbourhood was one of the poorest in Odense. These poor living standards are reflected in Andersen’s birth home.

Hans Christian Andersen at Children’s Level (for children and their adults)
This tour is custom built for groups of children who would like to learn more about Hans Christian Andersen in a more approachable fashion. You never know what could happen! The tour focuses on children and storytelling/activities.

Recycled buildings
From Munke Mose we walk through the narrow winding streets where buildings tell the story of times passage. We end up in Brandts Clothing Mill and Rosenbaek Square – old industrial buildings that now form a cultural centre.

Jernbanegade (Railway Street)
Jernbanegade was constructed as a sort of parisian boulevard past Odense Castle to the Railway Station. No travellers could doubt that Odense had ambition. Along this street are stately old buildings – still in use, though not always for their original purpose.

The Funen Village
In the Funen Village we travel back in time, to experience how life was lived during H.C. Andersen’s time in the 1800s.
The Funen village consists of 26 buildings, and during the guided tour we will visit several of the buildings.
A guided tour of The Funen Village can vary from guide to guide, but the trip can include:

  • The rector’s house and a trip to see the village animals
  • The water mill
  • The old school
  • The prison
  • Possibly the blacksmith or the small farm

The guide will tell about the rural life and how farms were structured in the 1800s.

Odense Cathedral (Saint Canute’s Church)
The history of our Cathedral starts dramatically with the murder of King Canute the Holy. Join us in the crypts where his bones are exhibited in a shrine. Here are also the royal graves connected to Claus Berg’s large altarpiece in the cathedral.

Guide tour of City Hall
City Hall lies right in the city’s old centre “Flakhaven” and consists of an older and a newer part. See Yan’s art work “Funen Spring”, the city council room, the wedding room, the state rooms and the memorial wall.

Odense’s Convents
At the end of medieval times there were close to 300 munks and priests in Odense. We take a walk around time between the old convents and hear about their individual importance they and the clergy have had in the city.

Brandts Textile Mill
Brandts today is a cultural meeting place and at the same time the old buildings house a wealth of stories. Enjoy the beautiful old buildings and hear the story of way back when Brandts was one of the leading industries in the city.
