Haapajärvi is a town and municipality of Finland.

It is located in the province of Oulu and is part of the Northern Ostrobothnia region. The town has a population of 6,899 and covers an area of 789.11 square kilometres (304.68 sq mi) of which 23.44 km2 (9.05 sq mi) is water. The population density is 9.01 inhabitants per square kilometre (23.3/sq mi).

The municipality is unilingually Finnish.

Sights

  • Haapajärvi Church , a wooden cruciform church from 1802. The church has a 30-voice organ from 2002.

  • Skier Mika Myllylä’s medal collection at City Hall
  • Lemmens bridge, a wooden arch bridge and the Ylpää school environment on the bank of the Kalajoki river. (Former, the bridge collapsed in December 2020)
  • Cattle were affected, especially in the spring 

Events 

A resurrection festival was held in Haapajärvi in July 2013.  A mega event for geocachers was held in Haapajärvi from 6 to 8. July 2018. 

Food culture 

In the 1980s, Haapajärvi’s parish food was meat stew , ie meat soup , sourdough bread, barley porridge and berry soup. 

Services

Haapajärvi is home to the Haapajärvi Vocational College, a vocational school run by the Kalajoki Valley Education Association . Among other things, the educational institution has a courtyard barn built for teaching and research use, which is one of the most modern in Finland. The Business Administration Unit of Central Ostrobothnia University of Applied Sciences trains tradenomas in Haapajärvi . In addition to primary and secondary schools, there is a high school in the area. 

The branch office and venue of the Ylivieska District Court operate in Haapajärvi, as do the Jokilaaksoja Tax Office, the Jokilaaksojen Kela Insurance District and the Nivala-Haapajärvi Regional Employment Office. There is also the Haapajärven Depot of the Defense Forces Explosive Institution (formerly the Haapajärvi Arms Depot).
