Museum Het Zotte Kunstkabinet in Mechelen is a museum with paintings from the 16th century .

The focus is on satirically moralizing paintings with original works from the region of Hieronymus Bosch . The collection includes works by the studio Jheronimus Bosch, Jan Verbeeck , Frans Verbeeck , Pieter Brueghel the Younger , Jan Massijs , Hans Baldung , Marten van Cleve the Elder , Otto van Veen , etc. All these painters had close contacts with the rhetoricians . Explanation of all these crazy paintings is only possible after studying texts written by these ‘literati’ from the sixteenth century. Good knowledge of Middle Dutch is necessary for this.

The museum is located in the historic building ‘t Vliegend Peert . This is the birthplace of Mayken Verhulst , Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s mother-in-law and mentor . The historical monument is located in the center of Mechelen near the St. Rumbold’s Cathedral .

The museum shows the research results of the scientific institute Center for Ancient Art ‘t Vliegend Peert .
