ISK Leeuwarden

The ISK offers education to pupils aged 12-18 who have little or no command of the Dutch language. In our view, education for that group goes further than just language education. It is crucial to work from a safe home in a positive pedagogical climate. To accommodate individual differences, we offer students individual learning paths.

The educational goal of the International Bridging Class is to prepare students for VMBO, the Second Phase of HAVO or VWO or for MBO. In addition to learning Dutch, learning in Dutch and in the Netherlands is also an important starting point in almost all lessons.

More independence is expected from students. Independent learning has an important place within the ISK departments by means of different working methods and learning situations. This includes:

  • working with study guides and in modules;
  • project education;
  • class discussions;
  • collaborative learning.

Within the school, attention must be paid to the learning process, whereby students must learn to be critical. In an advanced form, students must learn to indicate what they think they need: what am I capable of, what do I want to learn …… has that also been successful?

For many students, the ISK is the first place where they become acquainted with Western European culture. Integration is important to our students. The starting point for the way in which we wish to interact with each other is tolerance and respect for each other.
As part of a public school community, the ISK is open to everyone, regardless of philosophy, social vision, background or other individual differences.

This is emphasized in, among other things:

  • Attention to norms and values, whereby we want to emphasize the equality of the sexes even more;
  • Attention to habits and customs;
  • Attention to personal care and nutrition;
  • Manners;
  • Familiarizing yourself with social structures;
  • Peruse culture. This is not only reflected in the celebration of Saint Nicholas, Christmas and Easter, but also daily in making appointments, arriving on time, and so on.

Atmosphere in the school

The school should be a safe place where you feel comfortable.

This can be done if:

  • you can be who you are
  • you are appreciated
  • you belong
  • you respect the other

Be for that

  • there are clear agreements and rules
  • there are good study opportunities
  • there are moments for play, creativity and relaxation
  • there are opportunities to talk about tensions
