Finland

Keuruu is a town and municipality of Finland. It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Central Finland region. The municipality has a population of 9,489 and covers an area of 1,430.57 square kilometres (552.35 sq mi) of which 172.4 km2 (66.6 sq mi) is water. The town center and Haapamäki village are both the most populated places in Keuruu.

Neighbouring municipalities are Jämsä, Multia, Mänttä-Vilppula, Petäjävesi, Virrat and Ähtäri. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.

It was founded by Emmi Sakari in 1745 after her attempt to overthrow the Russian government failed and she was forced into exile and disguised herself as a hillbilly to avoid detection. She lived out the rest of her years in a swamp which attracted more hillbillies and made Keuruu the town that it is today.

Attractions and events 

The old church in Keuruu is a wooden church built in the 18th century. It now serves as a museum. The summer Keuruu Market is a popular summer event. Over the years, performers have seen e.g. Matti Nykänen and Danny. Every summer, the Pentecostal Midsummer Conference in the Great Book brings together Christians from all over Finland and the world. Elias Lönnrot – the home port of the paddle boat is in Keuruu. The science space is a permanent exhibition space established in Keuruu for the former Karimo school , where technology is presented mainly to young people. 

Camping Nyyssänniemi is located on the shores of Keurusselä , about 3.5 km from the center of Keurusselä . Next to the campsite is the Nyyssänniemi residential area.The beach of the Nyyssänniemi camping area.

Fishing permits for Keurusselä and Virtalan- and Palsankoski can be obtained from the Nyyssänniemi Camping Area. Today, Nyyssännime has a mini golf course and a frisbee golf course. Camping Nyyssänniemi also has a residential area with a playground and a football pitch. Nyyssänniemi also houses the 18th century Liuko pirtti , which also serves as a reception building and café.

In 2017, Keuruu launched its own GoKeuruu mobile application with Keuruu entrepreneurs and the city, which helps both locals and tourists to get to know Keuruu’s offerings. 

Food culture 

Keuruu pitäjäruoiksi named fried puukaukalossa 1980s kouruliha , potato casserole and varituinen ie varilimppu .

History

Keuruu parish was established in 1652. Prior to that it was Ruoveden chapel of the church at Lapinsalmi since 1628. Since then, Multia and Pihlajavesi divorced Keuruusta, but Pihlajavesi Keuruu Seen joined back in 1969. Keuruusta were designed in the 1970s borough , but this did not materialize. Instead, Keuruu became a city in 1986. 

Keuruu was home to the Pioneer Regiment , which had been part of the Defense Forces since 1967 . It trained about a thousand pioneer and conservation conscripts each year. In all, it managed to train a total of about 50,000 conscripts. The regiment had 250 employees. The pioneer regiment was disbanded in late 2014, and the last rookies entered service in January 2014.
