Korčula City Museum

Korčula Town Museum

The Korčula Town Museum is located in the Gabrielis Palace, a representative example of 15th- and 16th-century residential architecture, situated on the central square of the old town core. The palace is distinguished by its decorative stone façade, adorned with a balcony and the coat of arms of the Gabrielis family.

A walk through the museum’s exhibition spaces, unique in the wider area, brings to life the cultural and economic history of Korčula from prehistory to the present day.

“7000 Years Under the Sea – The Submerged Prehistoric Settlement near Cape Soline”

The Korčula City Museum has reopened its doors after several years of renovation.

Housed in the Gabrielis Palace, has reopened its doors after several years of renovation. The project included the reconstruction of the palace itself and the creation of a new permanent museum display.

This renovation is significant for two reasons – a protected immovable cultural heritage site of the Republic of Croatia has been restored, and the monument’s values have been presented through a newly arranged museum display.

The architectural restoration project was based on conservation guidelines and research, which revealed new elements of the building’s historical development and confirmed its heritage value. The main reconstruction project of the Gabrielis Palace was prepared by Dražen Colnago, while the execution project was created by Ivo Vojnović. The architectural design and furnishing project was carried out by Arhitektonska radionica Centar under the leadership of Petra Ivanišević Brzulja.

The Croatian Museum Council at the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia approved the museological concept of the new permanent display, designed by Marija Hajdić, Tonko Barčot, Dinko Radić, and Sani Sardelić. The archaeological collection was curated and arranged by Marta Kalebota.

The renovation of the Gabrielis Palace and the new museum display were made possible with funding from the European Union through the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Cohesion, along with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the City of Korčula, and the Dubrovnik-Neretva County.

The project is part of the broader initiative Rural Educational, Cultural and Ethnographic Tourist Attraction, aimed at preserving cultural heritage and linking different areas of the county into a unique tourist product called Paths of the Past.
