Le Kremlin-Bicêtre is most famous as the location of the Bicêtre Hospital, where Superintendent Philippe Pinel is credited as being the first to introduce humane methods into the treatment of the mentally ill, in 1793. Its most notorious guest was the Marquis de Sade.
The Kremlin-Bicêtre is a municipality in the inner suburbs of Paris . It is located to the south-east of the capital, at the Porte d’Italie .
The name “Kremlin” comes from an inn sign, Au Sergent du Kremlin , a souvenir of the Russian campaign in 1812. “Bicêtre”, in old French bissêtre that we find used by Molière in L’Étourdi in 1658, means “sad fate, misfortune”. This toponym seems to derive from an old manor, now disappeared the Petit Winchester , francized Vincestre , then Bicestre , then by deformation Bissêtre (Bicêtre), which means “misfortune” in Old French, the manor having been burnt down by the Burgundians.
