Le Robert is a town and the third-largest commune in the French overseas department of Martinique. It is located in the northeastern (Atlantic) side of the island of Martinique. It contains the Sainte Rose-de-Lima church, Club Nautique Wind Force club, Stade Municipal du Robert and a sportsground. The village of Hyacinthe lies in the commune.
Sights
City Hall. Originally built in wood, it was rebuilt in 1933 by Lucien Bellus, the former Mayor. Its windows and basket-handle doors are inspired by 19th century constructions.
Anse Coco beach. Located at the end of Pointe Larose, it is a relaxation area very popular with connoisseurs.
The Church of Santa Rosa de Lima was built in 1743, in honor of the one who was to be the patron saint of the town, the Holy Rose. The bell tower and the roof were redone in 1986, after the fire which devastated them.
Bois Pothau. Located to the north-east of Robert, this 268 hectare coastal forest set is crisscrossed by several tracks which offer very beautiful walks. At the end of a small path winding through the mangroves, the small fine sand beach of Pointe Banane offers a most splendid panorama of the Caravelle peninsula.
Lime Kiln, old houses. At the beginning of the 19th century, the town of Robert had about thirty sugar dwellings. At the end of the sugar economy, one of the last factories, that of Four-à-Chaux, closed in 1963. Some of these remains are listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments: the Habitation Gaschette (18th century). century), the Seaside dwelling (18th – 19th centuries), pottery and the Chancel islet dwelling (17th – 18th centuries).
Seaside fountain. Initially erected on the church square, the fountain is now installed on the Robert’s seaside.
The Saint-Joseph chapel of Pontalery. Slaves would have built it in homage to the Virgin Mary in 1802. Probably destroyed by the cyclone of 1891, it would have been rebuilt 3 years later and dedicated to Saint Joseph.
The churh of Saint Joan of Arc in Verte-Pre. Three men are at the origin of its construction: Mr Leray, Mr Maignan and Mr Morinière. The result of the exemplary solidarity of the inhabitants of Vert-Pré, its construction was completed in 1934.
