It is the wine-making capital of northern Gironde and lies near Saint-Émilion and Pomerol.
The city, which developed at the confluence of the Isle and the Dordogne , at the center of a rich wine-growing region, was from the outset an important port through which goods transit from all over Europe. Long the second city in northern Guyenne after Bordeaux, it is its rival in terms of trade or taxation. Important garrison town (it will house in particular several cavalry and infantry regiments, as well as the national school of health reserve officers) until quite recently, it is today an economic and commercial center radiating on the north of the department, strongly influenced by a constantly growing Bordeaux conurbation .
