Inaugurated in 1998 as part of the last world exhibition of the century. XX, whose theme was “The oceans, a heritage for the future”, the Oceanário eternalized the connection between Lisbon and the ocean.
The Lisbon Oceanarium is a public aquarium of reference in Lisbon, Portugal and internationally. The equipment receives about 1 million people annually, who go through its exhibitions, making it the most visited cultural equipment in Portugal.
The excellence of the exhibitions, combined with the symbolism of the architecture of the buildings, makes the Oceanário a unique and unforgettable place. The equipment integrates two buildings, the original of the Oceans and the new building of the Sea, connected by a huge atrium decorated with a magnificent panel of 55 thousand tiles, which offers access to the exhibitions and the educational area.
Assuming the evolutionary trend of modern aquariums, the Oceanário continuously develops educational activities that make the oceans, their inhabitants, their mission known and that address the environmental challenges of today. Also in this context, the Oceanário collaborates with several institutions in scientific research projects, in the conservation of marine biodiversity and that promote the sustainable development of the oceans. The technical and scientific experience of the team of biologists and engineers ensures the excellence of the exhibition and advises several aquariums and similar institutions.
