History

Vilppula became Ruovesi Chapel Parish in 1891 and an independent parish in 1904 , when parts of Keuruu were also added. Vilppula Church was completed in the early 20th century.

The isolation of Vilppula decreased when ship traffic to Ruovesi began in 1870 , and the railway was completed from Tampere via Vilppula and Haapamäki to Vaasa in 1883 . At the same time, a road was also built from Ruovesi via Vilppula and Mänttä to Keuruu. In 1895–1897, GA Serlachius built a narrow-gauge railway from Vilppula railway station to Mänttä.

The Mänttä factory community seceded from Vilppula in 1921. In 1973, more than two thirds of the municipality of Pohjaslahti was annexed to Vilppula.

In 2007, a municipal and service structure survey was launched in Upper Pirkanmaa between the cities of Mänttä and Virta and the municipalities of Ruovesi and Vilppula . Eventually, Ruovesi and Virrat dropped out of the municipal union preparations and the city of Mänttä-Vilppula was formed when Mänttä and Vilppula merged on 1 January 2009.
