Municipality of Ključ

History of Ključ

The Old Town of Ključ is a jewel of medieval Bosnian heritage and architecture, with great historical and cultural value. It played a key role in the politics of the Bosnian medieval state, ruled by the powerful Hrvatinić noble family. Ključ was the last stronghold of King Stjepan Tomašević before the Ottoman conquest, marking the end of Bosnia’s independence. Under Ottoman rule, it became a military and administrative center, and later in 1878 was again a site of resistance, this time against Austro-Hungarian forces.

The fortress was strategically built on steep cliffs above the Sana River, with secret passages, towers, and defensive walls, surrounded by a settlement that served as a trade, cultural, and religious hub.

Today, the Old Town of Ključ is preserved within a pine forest, offering visitors a peaceful natural environment. Restoration projects have revived parts of the fortress, improved access roads, walking paths, and visitor areas. With future plans for lighting and tourist facilities, the site continues to stand as both a symbol of Bosnian history and a fairytale-like landmark for all who visit.
