Mursko Središće is the northernmost Croatian town known as the northern gate of Croatia. The place received the status of the City in 1997, and the City is located on the right bank of the Mura and is an important traffic hub due to the international road border crossing with Slovenia on the state road D-209. 

Mursko Središće is and is an important administrative and cultural center. It is the seat of the city administration, a bank, an exchange office, the police, a library and a reading room, a cinema, a school with a one hundred and fifty-year tradition attended by 580 students, an infirmary and two kindergartens.
