The Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos is located in Sigri of western Lesvos, in the center of the protected area of the Petrified Forest, one of the most beautiful and rarest monuments of our geological heritage which has been declared by the Greek State of Diatri. ». It was founded in 1994 with the aim of studying, researching, highlighting and protecting the Petrified Forest of Lesvos and is supervised by the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
The visit to the Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos is a unique experience. Impressive is the abundance of fossil logs, which form a fossilized forest ecosystem that does not occur in any other part of our planet.
The first exhibition space of the Museum is dedicated to the Petrified Forest of Lesvos and the evolution of plants. The evolution of plants on earth and the flora of the Petrified Forest are projected through rare fossils. In the evolutionary room of the Aegean, through impressive models, the geological phenomena and the processes related to the creation of the Petrified Forest as well as the geological history of the Aegean basin for the last 20 million years are projected.
A seismic bank simulating large and catastrophic earthquakes has been installed and operates on the premises of the Museum.
Every year, international scientific conferences, exhibitions, lectures, screenings and various events take place at its facilities. The summer events “Feasts of the Earth” are organized, as well as the Agrotourism Festival. Throughout the year, standard educational programs are implemented for school groups as well as summer, special and thematic educational programs.
In Mytilene (November 8, 17) operates the Information Center of the Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos with the main goal of providing information to all visitors, special exhibition and educational activities as well as the provision of information material.
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network.
