Nivala is a town and municipality of Finland. It is located in the Northern Ostrobothniaregion. The town has a population of 10,500 and covers an area of 536.88 square kilometres of which 8.92 km2 is water. The population density is 19.89 inhabitants per square kilometre. Neighbouring municipalities are Haapajärvi, Haapavesi, Sievi, and Ylivieska. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.

Nivala has 11 primary schools, a secondary school and a high school . Nivala College, the Jokilaakso Music College, the Nivala Vocational College run by the Jokilaakso Education Association and the second oldest adult education center in Finland, the Adult Education and Apprenticeship Center established in 1956, also provide education at Nivala . Nivala is published once a week Nivala-Journal a subscription. The second, as Finland’s first commercial local radio station, began operations on Radio Lakeus Nivala on April 27, 1985. It ceased operations in 1989.
Attractions in Nivala include the church, town hall, water tower , Kyösti and Kalervo Kallio Museum, Katvala Homeland Museum, Kyösti Wilkuna Study Museum , Tillar Statue, Hilippa Statue, Seed Statue, NK Malmberg Monument and Kaarina Gallery. Perhaps the best known of the people of Nivala is President Kyösti Kallio .
Nivala is known for his homeland work and his spirit of rebellion. Homeland work is maintained by the Nivala Society. The visible symbol of homework is the windmill right in the center of Nivala. Indeed, locals are sometimes playfully called windmill-harders. A little from the center towards Lake Haapajärvi is the Katvala Peasant Museum area maintained by the Nivala Society, which consists of numerous historical buildings.

Nature
The Kalajoki river flows through the municipality. The biggest lake in the region is Pidisjärvi and the two other lakes are Suojärvi and Erkkisjärvi.
