Nurmes

Finland

Nurmes is a town and municipality of Finland. The town has a population of 9,500 and covers an area of 1,854.78 square kilometres.

Nurmes railway station is the northern terminus of a twice-daily VR passenger train service from Joensuu; The service has been under threat of closure but is currently part of rail services that ministry of transportation requires VR to run in exchange for monopoly in more attractive routes and this agreement is currently valid until December 2019.

Karelian village and spa hotel Break Sokos Hotel Bomba is situated in Nurmes. Bomba Karelian Village is a tourist destination for Karelian construction and food culture and traditions. Near by Bomba area is Hotel Hyvärilä Holiday-and Youth Centre and Pielis-golf golfcourse.

Culture 

Nurmes House is the Nurmes Cultural Center, which houses the Nurmes City Library, Kino Hannikainen Cinema, Galleria Tyko and Köts Museum. In addition to the Köts Museum, Nurmes has another museum run by the city of Nurmes, the Ikola Museum, which operates mainly during the summer.

Architecture 

The architecture of the Nurmes agglomeration is mainly from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. The wooden houses of Old Kauppala were built in the late 19th century. Otherwise, the style trend of functionalism is also visible in the agglomeration . There are three nationally significant built cultural environments, ie RKY sites, in Nurmes. These are Nurmes railway station , Nurmes Old Town area and Ylikylä .

Summer Theater 

There are two active summer theaters in Nurmes, the Höljäkä Summer Theater and the Bomb Summer Theater, in addition to which the Kynsiniemi Summer Theater operates more irregularly.

Food 

Karelian food culture has a strong influence in Nurmes. Natural dishes like mushrooms and fish are used a lot in cooking and many of the dishes are prepared in the oven. Karelian food can be sampled during summer at Bomb’s Summer Market and Bomb’s Restaurant. Sults , Karelian pies and Karelian roast are the most famous Karelian dishes. Karelian pies from Nurmes can be found all over Finland, made by Pielispakari, Porokylä Bakery and Männikkölän Pirtti. The food industry is a strong and growing industry in Nurmes; in addition to Karelian pies, Nurmes leaves fish and berry products from all over Finland.

In the 1980s, Nurmes’ parishes were mixed pot , ie potatoes in milk broth, and a berry cup , ie blueberry or lentil with oat flakes and rye flour.

Attractions 

Nurmes is known as the city of birches, as there are thousands of birches in the center of Nurmes, in Old Kauppa. Bomba Karelian Village and Spa and Hyvärilä Youth and Tourism Center are located in Nurmes . A new five-storey extension will be built at the Bomb Spa Hotel between 2021 and 2022, with 93 lake view rooms and a restaurant. Pohjois-Karjalan Osuuskauppa PKO invested a total of EUR 16 million in the development of Bomba. At the same time, the spa hotel’s existing meeting and lobby facilities and 17 old rooms will be renovated.

Services 

Education 

In Nurmes, basic education is provided in two integrated schools in grades 1–9 ( Kirkkokatu school and Valtimo school ) and in grades 1–6 in Porokylä . In August 2019, there were a total of 784 students in basic education. Secondary education is provided by Nurmes High School and secondary vocational education is provided by Riveria, a vocational school run by the North Karelian Association of Education Municipalities . If you wish, you can also complete a double degree (vocational degree and matriculation degree) in Riveria , or fairway studies that facilitate further studies at Karelia University of Applied Sciences .

Additional services

Nurmes Health Center offers basic health care in Nurmes on weekdays, and in emergency cases also in the evenings and on weekends. The artery , in turn, has an artery health station . Emergency health services at night are available from the joint emergency room of the North Karelia Central Hospital in Joensuu . 

Nurmes City Library serves in the offices of the Main Library and Valtimo Library , as well as through the online services of Nurmes Library Car and Vaara Libraries .
