Finland

Orivesi is a town and a municipality of Finland. It is part of the Pirkanmaa region. The municipality has a population of 9,017 and covers an area of 960.09 square kilometres of which 160.53 km2 is water. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.

Orivesi was founded in 1869. The municipality of Eräjärvi was consolidated with Orivesi in 1973. A part of the municipality of Längelmäki was consolidated with Orivesi in 2007. Today, neighbouring municipalities are Juupajoki, Jämsä, Kangasala, Kuhmoinen, Ruovesi and Tampere. The distance from Orivesi to Tampere is 43 kilometres (27 mi).

Orivesi is mostly known for its Oriveden Opisto art school. The town center of Orivesi is located by the Lake Längelmävesi.

  • Hörtsänä Arboretum (Village of Onnistaipale) founded by Hugo Hörtsänä in 1909 
  • The Rönn stage, which has been danced since 1949, is located in Orivesi’s Eräjärvi. In addition to the dance floor and performance stages, Rönn has a marina, restaurant, pub and summer theater. 
  • The Auvinen House, located in the city center, offers handicraft enthusiasts, for example, materials and products. 
  • Purnu Art Center and Aimo Tukiainen Artist Studio (Pitkäjärvi)
  • Leporanta Art Center (Längelmäki)

Orivesi churches 

The church in the center of Orivesi has burned to the ground as many as Four times. The first church is known to have been destroyed as early as 1577. The next church, built in 1650, burned down in 1775 and the one that followed only a little later in 1779. The fourth church, designed by Matti Åkerblom , was completed in 1781. however, a wooden belfry was spared the fire. The current Arched Church in the center was designed by Kaija and Heikki Siren and completed in 1961. The church’s altarpiece was made by sculptor Kain Tapper . 

The Eräjärvi wooden church and church museum are located in Eräjärvi, built in 1821 , while the Längelmäki church , church museum and magazine museum built in 1772 are located in Längelmäki . 

Nature Spot 

The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation celebrated 100 years of Finland by choosing one hundred “Finnish nature pearls”. Orivesi was the only place from which two natural pearls were chosen: Eräpyhä and Pukala. 

The Eräpyhä recreation area is located in the shore scenery of Längelmävesi. In the nature conservation and recreation area there is a nature trail, a shed, a pier and a beach, an old feldspar quarry and an ancient sacrificial site, the Nun Church. 

The Pukala recreational forest is located around Lake Pukalajärvi, which is more than 50 meters deep and clear. Metsähallitus calmed owned Pukalajärven the north side of the beach and the forests of the islands in 1968. The area has trails, campfire sites and lean-tos. 

Services 

Orivesi’s leisure facilities include an ice rink, indoor swimming pool, sports hall, artificial turf field, sports field, multi-purpose trough, tennis court and outdoor routes for both summer and winter users. Orivesi’s social and health services are provided by the Orivesi-Tampere co-operation area. 

Education 

The educational services offered by the City of Orivesi include early childhood education, primary schools, a co-educational school, a high school, a unit of Tredu Vocational College, a library, a civic college and a unit of Merikanto College. 

In Orivesi, basic education is provided by five primary schools and the Orivesi co-educational school . Secondary education is provided by Orivesi High School, which in 2018 had three lines of emphasis: writer’s high school, volleyball high school and sports line. Vocational training is provided by Tampere Region Vocational College Tredu.

In August 2018, the principal positions of Orivesi High School and Co-educational School were merged. 

Culture 

Orivesi includes Jalmari Finnen ‘s play Pitkäjärveläiset , published in 1923 , which tells the story of the village of Pitkäjärvi at the end of the 18th century, and the cartoon Tarmo Koiviston’s Mämmilä , which began to be published in 1975. 

Orivesi Summer 

The “Orivesi Suvi” brand has brought together several events, such as theater, art exhibitions, a design sales exhibition, stage dances and music events. The events are organized by Rönn Summer Theater and Amusement Center, Purnu, Leporanta Art Center and Orivesi Taitokeskus. 

Food culture 

In the 1980s, blood sausage and blueberry poplar were named Orivesi’s parishes .
