Perchtoldsdorf

Austria

You’ll find many heurigen here, where you can sample local wines and enjoy good, hearty cuisine.

This old market town with colorful buildings, referred to locally as Petersdorf, is one of the most visited spots in Lower Austria when the Viennese go on a wine tour.  Perchtoldsdorf is a market town in the Mödling District, in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It is known chiefly for its winemaking.

It is located immediately at the Vienna city limits, south of the Liesing borough and about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) southwest of the city centre. The western parts of the municipal area border on the Vienna Woods mountain range.

With a population of 14,614 (as of 2012), Perchtoldsdorf is the district’s second largest municipality, after the administrative seat Mödling. It is served by the Vienna S-Bahn network and can also be reached by bus and tramway lines run by the Wiener Linien public transport company.

Perchtoldsdorf is not as well known as Grinzing, which is actually within the city limits of Vienna, but many visitors find it less touristy. It has a Gothic church, and part of its defense tower dates from the early 16th century. A vintners’ festival, held annually in early November, attracts many Viennese. Local growers make a “goat” from grapes for this festive occasion.
