Prokoško Lake

Prokoško Lake is a lake of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located in the municipality of Fojnica and it is 1,670 metres (5,480 ft) above sea level.

The lake is visited by 20,000 tourists each year.

Prokoško Lake is located on the mountain Vranica, Bosnia and Herzegovina and is of glacial origin. It is 22 km away from Fojnica.

Due to the numerous illegally built cottages in which catering services are provided, the landscape of the entire lake has been “destroyed”. In the wider area of the lake are endemic species of flora and fauna. An endemic specimen of the amphibian – triton – still remains in the lake.

The area has been protected since 2005. It belongs to the category “monument of nature – III”. The lake can be reached from Fojnica, by a road 21 kilometers long and mostly macadam. Signposts have been set up along the road. Entrance is charged. There are about 250 illegally built cottages around the lake where catering services are provided.
