Rigshospitalet

Rigshospitalet has a long and exciting history behind it. On 1 January 2015, Rigshospitalet and Glostrup Hospital merged.

Rigshospitalet’s historical background dates back more than 250 years to Denmark’s first real hospital, “The Royal Frederik’s Hospital”, which was established to care for and treat poor Copenhageners free of charge. And
The hospital opened in 1757 and was located in Bredgade, where today you can find the Museum of Art and Design.

In 1910, the hospital became part of the state and moved to its current location on Blegdamsvej. The hospital also changed its name to Rigshospitalet, as it would in future be accessible to all citizens in the kingdom.

The modern Rigshospital, with its tall, gray buildings is from the 1960s and is today part of the Capital Region.
