Saint Mary’s Royal Church

Belgium

Saint Mary’s Royal Church (French: Église Royale Sainte-Marie, Dutch: Koninklijke Sint-Mariakerk) is a Roman Catholic parish church located on the Place de la Reine/Koninginneplein in the Brussels municipality of Schaerbeek (Belgium). Officially dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, it is popularly associated with Queen Louise-Marie, first Queen of the Belgians, as is the square where it is located, which earned it the title of “Royal”.

This site is served by the Botanique/Kruidtuin metro station on lines 2 and 6 of the Brussels metro.

The church has a bronze entrance door, surmounted by a beautiful mosaic and the stained glass windows painted by the glass artist Jean-Baptiste Capronnier. Inside, a statue of the “Sedes” (virgin) dating from 1890 is on display, not far from the high altar in gilded copper.

The pulpit of truth, in stone and sculpted marble, inspired by the works of Pisano, is the work of De Martelaere.
A magnificent ceramic by artist Max Van Derlinden retraces some aspects of the history of the building. The great organs of the factor Kerkhoff date from 1907, and have 41 stops on three keyboards and pedals.
