Salgótarján is the capital of Nógrád county, north-eastern Hungary, making it the third smallest county capital based on population.

Sights

In the vicinity of Salgótarján we meet many castles (castle ruins). Examples are: Salgó and Somoskő castles, which are the most visited. Museums hide in the heart of the city from the eyes of the curious tourist, as among the panel buildings we no longer encounter much of the houses built before the 1960s . The exceptions to this are the houses of the Fairgrounds and the Rokkant settlement. Here you will find the only underground mining museum in Hungary, as well as a reservoir used only for fishing purposes. The tourist destinations are mainly in the northern part of the city. In the south, industry is gaining ground. It has been located in Baglyasalja since 2001a sculpture park where statues from the time of socialism are located in the city. Other important sights are the multitude of churches and cultural institutions.

Culture 

Salgótarján older cultures did not really have the 1960s , 1970s, due to advances in early. There are no memories of the Turkish era, so the area has no or only a small part of Turkish cultures. The main cultural values ​​are the Palóc traditions. That’s what the shows here are about.

The International Dixieland Festival is held every year in Salgótarján . This is when famous jazz bands visit the city.

The Nógrádi and Slovak Folk-days a Slovakia jointly organized folk dance and folk traditions preserved ( in 2009 from palóc specialties premiere) tour program by 1996 . they have been held every year since 31 July . 

A few more bands and performing arts groups that have achieved outstanding success are the ones who are aging the reputation of urban culture.
