Savonlinna Summer University is a summer university operating in Savonlinna , founded in 1964. The summer university is maintained by the Savonlinna Summer University Association, founded in 1990. Its founding members are eight municipalities in the Savonlinna region, the University of Joensuu and the South Savo Regional Association . The purpose of the association is to promote and develop education and cultural life as well as lifelong learning, mainly in the Eastern Savonia region. Savonlinna Summer University is a statutory educational institution for free educational work . Approximately 2,500 to 3,000 students participate in various courses each year. The premises of Savonlinna Summer University are located in the center of Savonlinna, at Puistokatu 5.

Savonlinna Summer University is especially known as an organizer of open university education. The summer university serves its members by providing the staff and shop steward training they need. The Summer University is also involved in cultural and tourism co-operation in the Savonlinna region.
