Sint-Janshuismolen

Belgium

The Sint-Janshuis Mill in the Belgian city of Bruges is located on Kruisvest , on the edge of the city center. The windmill that stands today was built in 1770 and functions as a flour mill . It is already the third mill on that site. It owes its name to the hospital of St. John . The guesthouse may never have owned the mill, but interest was charged on it for its benefit.

Windmills have graced Bruges’ ramparts ever since the construction of the outer city wall at the end of the 13th century. They had a key economic function until well into the 19th century.

The mill was rebuilt around 1550, but it was blown over around 1744. Pieter Van Nieuwenhuyse owned half of the Sint-Janshuis Mill, but died on May 6, 1709. The current mill was only founded in 1770. The year of construction is carved in the iron beam. The mill was bought by Pieter Descamp , dean of the bakery trade on behalf of 26 other free master bakers. Hence the name Bakkersmolen that was sometimes used. Above the entrance the name “Sint Aubertus” was cut down. Sint-Aubertus was the patron of the Bruges baker’s craft.
