History
From The Brothers of Mercy Johannes de Deo in Haarlem to Spaarne Gasthuis with branches in five locations. From the present to 1581.
The history of Spaarne Gasthuis from the present to the past:
2015 – Spaarne Gasthuis
The Spaarne Hospital and the Kennemer Gasthuis merged on March 22, 2015. The name of the new hospital: the Spaarne Gasthuis. A hospital with branches in
- Hillegom
- New-Vennep
- Velsen-Noord
- Hoofddorp
- Haarlem
- Heemstede
1989 – Spaarne Hospital
The Spaarne Hospital was founded on January 1, 1989. Two hospitals merged:
- the Diaconessenhuis Heemstede
- the Mariastichting Haarlem
The merger of both hospitals into one Spaarne Hospital brought together the Catholic and Protestant basis. Since 2005, the Spaarne Hospital has been located in Hoofddorp, with outpatient clinics in Nieuw-Vennep, Heemstede and Hillegom.
1898 – Maria Foundation
Pastor Thünissen founded the ‘Vereeniging der Sick Nurses Franciscanessen of the Mariastichting in Haarlem’ together with Roman Catholic sisters in 1898. The hospital was on Kamperlaan in Haarlem.
In 1973 the hospital was given a new building that could accommodate 524 inpatients.
1874 – Diaconess House
Freule Teding van Berkhout founded the Diaconessenhuis in Haarlem in 1874. The lady belonged to the Protestant circle of the Réveil, which wanted to combine religious deepening with assistance.
In 1874, Lady Teding bought a house at 90 Nieuwe Gracht in Haarlem, which could accommodate eight patients. A few years later she took a new building into use on the Hazepaterslaan.
The new building was completed in Heemstede in 1973. This building is still in use as an outpatient clinic for Spaarne Gasthuis.
1991 – Kennemer Gasthuis
On July 1, 1991, three hospitals merged:
- Zeeweg Hospital IJmuiden
- Joannes de Deo in Haarlem
- Elisabeth’s or Groote Gasthuis in Haarlem
The new name: Het Kennemer Gasthuis
The Kennemer Gasthuis had locations in Haarlem and IJmuiden. In the years after the merger, the locations of St. Joannes de Deo and Zeeweg closed. There are now houses on the places where hospitals used to be.
The Kennemer Gasthuis built a new hospital in Haarlem-Noord.
The Kennemer Gasthuis had two locations:
- Location south at 22 Boerhaavelaan in Haarlem
- Location north at Vondelweg 999 in Haarlem
1928 – Zeeweg Hospital
At the end of the 1960s, the Zeeweg Hospital was built in IJmuiden. It was the new name for the Antonius Hospital. The Franciscan sisters founded the Antonius Hospital in IJmuiden in 1928.
19th century – Joannes de Deo
Joannes de Deo’s Brothers of Mercy started in Haarlem-Noord at the end of the 19th century with district nursing and a home for the elderly. From this developed the St. Joannes de Deo hospital.
1581 – Saint Elisabeth Hospital
The Elisabeth Gasthuis started as a healthcare institution. A guest house that took in the poor of the city in case of illness or accident. The Sint Elisabeth Gasthuis celebrated its 400th anniversary in 1981.
