Spreča Tuzla – Water Collection, Treatment, and Distribution

Public Company “Spreča” Joint-Stock Company Tuzla was established in 1954


Its main activity is the collection, purification, and distribution of water from the “Modrac” reservoir to industrial consumers in the municipalities of Lukavac and Tuzla city.

Besides this, the company is involved in water management project design and produces electricity in a small hydroelectric power plant on the Modrac dam with a capacity of 1.9 MWh, built jointly with JP “Elektroprivreda BiH” Sarajevo.

The project bureau:

  • Prepares, revises, and certifies various types of technical documentation in areas such as water protection, flood control, watercourse regulation, municipal infrastructure, and wastewater management.
  • Supervises the construction of water management facilities and systems.
  • Provides expert opinions.

In 2013, with significant co-financing from the Environmental Protection Fund of the Federation of BiH, a laboratory for monitoring the water quality of the Modrac reservoir was established, analyzing 27 physical and chemical parameters.

The company operates under the EN ISO 9001 quality management system since 2013, and since 2014 integrates environmental protection under EN ISO 14001 standards, updated in 2016.

Public Company “Spreča” Joint-Stock Company Tuzla, formerly the Water Association “Spreča” Tuzla, held its Founding Assembly on June 4, 1954. The Water Management Authority of the People’s Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina issued the founding permit on August 21, 1954. Over its 60+ years of existence, Spreča has adapted its organizational structure according to current regulations. In 2007, in line with public enterprise laws, it became a Public Company for Water Management Activities “Spreča” JSC Tuzla. The current ownership is 51% state and 49% private capital.

The company operates through two sectors. The Technical Sector includes the Design Office, Dam and Reservoir Team, and an operational laboratory for physical-chemical water analysis of the Modrac reservoir. For over 50 years, JP Spreča has managed the Modrac reservoir and dam.

Its core activity is collecting, treating, and distributing water to major industrial consumers in the Tuzla Canton, including: JP Elektroprivreda BiH Sarajevo (Tuzla Thermal Power Plant branch), Tuzla Salt Mine, Sisecam Soda Lukavac, Global Ispat Coke Industry Lukavac, Lukavac Cement Factory, and the public utility company “Water Supply and Sewerage Tuzla.”

Spreča is recognized as a reliable and quality business partner, operating under an Integrated Management System with ISO 9001 and 14001 certifications.

Their services are valued by municipalities such as Banovići, Doboj East, Gračanica, Gradačac, Kladanj, Lukavac, Maglaj, Sapna, Srebrenik, Tešanj, Živinice, Tuzla city, and the Water Agency of the Sava River Basin Sarajevo.

Besides water supply and project services, Spreča also produces electricity. In 1998, they launched their first mini hydropower plant, with plans for a new facility in the near future. This reflects their commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
