Hungary

Százhalombatta is a town in Pest county, Hungary. The name of this town in Hungarian literally means “One hundred tumuli” referring to the tumulus field at the edge of the town.

Sights

It got its name from the Iron Age mound tombs (also known as kurgans, tumulus, kunhalmas) on its border . 7-6. It was built in the 16th century by the people of the Hallstatt culture (this name was given to the people of unknown names by archaeologists). In 1847, János Varsányi surveyed 122 mounds. The Archaeological Park , opened in 1996, is a unique sight in Hungary and in the world with its excavated mound tomb No. 115, which has been open since 1998, and its reconstructed Bronze Age and Iron Age houses and kilns.

Brick factory.  Founded in 1893 by David Freiberger. It operated until 1990. In 1956, his workers’ council elected István Sefcsik as a delegate, who also worked for the local National Committee for Democratic Transformation and the Preservation of Public Order. He was therefore later imprisoned with several of himself.

Cross in the earth castle with the inscription 1686 1920 1991 from Hungary for free Hungary. It was inaugurated on November 1, 2007, All Saints’ Day by the Mounds Civil Preservation Association.

Serbian Orthodox Church of the Nativity of Our Lady . It was built around 1750 in Baroque style on the site of a Serbian Orthodox wooden church around 1720. The tower, which was damaged in World War II, was replaced in 1968 , and the tower helmet was restored in its original form in 1997. Next to it is a parish.

Serbian community house, including church history collection. It was built in 1913 to replace the old school building and teacher’s apartment. 

St. Lazarus Roman Catholic Church . 1910. Designer Emil Tőry architect. The construction was carried out by Antal Unghváry, a master builder from Jászberény. Frescoes in 1955 by dr. It was painted by Jenő Dénes.

Tomb of Roman Catholic pastor Ernő Bakody (1935-1945). During the war, Lazarus Bajron, a Serbian Greek Orthodox pastor, gave him the anointing of the patients.

Zenálkó Etel Community House (Szent László út 54.). It was built up in 1939 from donations (including some parts of Árpád Matta’s steam mill destined for demolition with the guarantee of Ferenc Jankovits) with the voluntary work of the locals. The department has been named an outstanding teacher at the time since 2011.

Millennium oak tree in Kossuth Lajos street. It was planted by Jakab Marinkacsa in 1896.

Holocaust memorial in the cemetery. It was inaugurated on September 13, 2012. Designed by József Buzay.

The new mortuary was handed over in 2002.

The Dunamenti Power Plant, built in several phases in the 1960s and 1970s and later rebuilt, has three original 207-meter-high chimneys. In front of it, the road leading to road 6 was officially named in 1998 by Sándor Csenterics, his first director (1960-1975) [13] . On September 25, 1998, the memorial plaque of Sándor Csenterics was inaugurated in the presence of his Deputy Technical Director, Győző Verle. In front of port No. 2 of the power plant, a turbine rotor is issued from before.

Chapel of the Assumption. It was built in 1987. It was designed by József Buzay. In it, two bronze reliefs by sculptor Béla Domonkos from Érd depict the Virgin Mary and St. Stephen.

Érd Vocational Training Center István Széchenyi Vocational High School and Grammar School in Százhalombatta (formerly Vocational High School of Industry and Economics, István Széchenyi Vocational High School since the 1989 academic year, commonly abbreviated SZISZKI). Since 1987. In it is the work of the artist László Bandy. The bust of István Széchenyi is the work of Tamás Varga.

Oil Flame Monument (monument to Soviet-Hungarian friendship). The work of Péter Rózsa (1975). In front of the train station. Until 2000, he stood in the main square.

Elephant. Sculpture in the garden of Napsugár Kindergarten (formerly DKV Kindergarten). The work of Anna Kárpáti (the same bust of Endre Ságvári). In the same place are murals by Johanna Kovács.

Since 1987, the Sticker Museum has exhibited rich archeological, historical and ethnographic finds from prehistoric times. In the XIX. and XX. In the 16th century, its building was a castle (renamed the Pannónia-puszta from Frigyes Glück’s Budapest hotel, later owned by the industrial magnate Pál Bíró from Hámor), then its council house and later a music school, the latter until the museum was founded. Since 2009, the works of Lajos Bíró have been on its street facade: reliefs by archaeologist Ildikó Poroszlai and Illés Ferenczi, deputy chairman of the council. Among others, Mrs. József Hetves and József Sebestyén also helped a lot in their work. Roman tombstones in the courtyard. The institution is maintained by the municipality.

I’m working. Monument to a tragic carbon monoxide poisoning accident at work from the first half of the 1940s. It was raised by Judge Paul in memory of his son and his colleagues.

Bust of Sándor Petőfi. The work of the Sovata sculptor Vince Bocskay from 1993. It can be seen in front of the SZTK (previously on the main square, temporarily standing in the garden of the Sticker Museum from May 2008).

The predecessor of today’s Százhalom Health Center and One-Day Surgery (Specialist Clinic) was officially handed over on January 16, 1978. Later expanded. The then economic director of Sándor Zálogh “is credited with the development and implementation of the concept of” central patient cartoning “, which is still based on the principle of” one patient – one documentation “.

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Stephen stands in the housing estate . Designed by Imre Makovecz . It was consecrated in 1996. Its bell was cast by Miklós Gombos from a donation from the Roman Catholics of Poeldijk in the Netherlands . His altar (1998), tabernacle and liturgical chairs (1999) were designed by Gábor Mezei. The goldsmith’s work of the tabernacle is the work of László Molnár. The cross of the church is the work of Mária Petrás (2000).

Kopjafa. Its creator is József Bodor from Iváncsa. It was inaugurated on October 14, 1989, in memory of the 1956 revolution. It was moved from the cemetery in 2000 to the Roman Catholic Church of St. Stephen.

A memorial stone to the victims of communism.

The decorative fountain entitled The Wonder Deer is the work of the ceramicist János Németh and the architect Károly Szerdahelyi. Since 2000.

Mayor’s Office and House of Parties. Szent István tér 3. was built in 1985. Its smaller wing was a party house until 1990.

József Szekeres Conference and Event Center since 2010. Szent István tér 12. One of its elements: Hungarian Floating Hall of Fame. Exhibition space. Krisztina Egerszegi became her first living member in 2013. Its forerunner operates in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The Reformed church was designed by József Finta . Built in 1999.

Kopjafa in the courtyard of the Reformed Church. It reminds us of the togetherness of the Hungarians and the Reformation. It was made by András Juhász, a wood carving master from Vác. Inauguration: March 15, 2018 Face-to-face inscription: “Lord You were our abode from generation to generation,” which is the beginning of the text of Psalm 90 – the Reformed anthem – translated by Károli Gáspár. On the back: “Gift of those confirmed in 2015-16”. “The top of the wooden pillar is reminiscent of a church tower with the star of Bethlehem at the top. Below it the star sign is the symbol of the spring equinox, the resurrection, below is the sun itself, Below is a pelican that is said to feed its chicks with its blood, which is a symbol of Jesus.

The statue of György Csaba Borgó entitled Dárdahegy was inaugurated on March 15, 1992 in memory of the War of Independence of 1848-49. The material is baking marble.

Memorial tree of Gábor Georgiades. The inscription on the copper plate in front of it reads: “This oak tree was planted in memory of Gábor Georgiades by the Nature-Friendly Section of the Danube Refinery on October 21, 2018.” Inauguration: November 18, 2018 The initiator of the tree planting is István Kovács. 

Béla Hamvas City Library. As a continuation of the previous library history, it has been serving readers since 1984, regardless of the House of Culture since 1991. It took on its current name in 1999. He is the initiator of the Hungarian Folk Tale Day (for the first time: in 2010), one of the stoves of the live storytelling movement.

Friendship Cultural Center (Friendship Cultural Center and Library until 1991, Friendship Cultural Center until 2010). Continuing its previous history, it has been in its current position since 1985. Eta Erdélyi and István Bodóczky’s secco decorate the stairwells of his theater. Erika Juhász oil paintings.

László Bandy’s World Tree. It was erected on 14 December 2006 (inauguration on 20 December 2006) between Damjanich Street and the later conference center, opposite the Reformed Church. It was demolished in the summer of 2008 due to construction, and in January 2009 it is already standing on the Zoltán Kodály promenade. It is made of 4.5 meters high, stainless steel. “The raw effect in the natural environment refers to the industrial city, it characterizes Százhalombatta.” 

Swimming pool complex. It consists of the János Szalai Swimming Pool and the City Sports Swimming Pool, Kodály Zoltán sétány 3. They include the mosaics of Béla Matolcsi (2008). The swimming pool, completed in 1974, was expanded in 1994 with a pool perpendicular to it a little lower. The sports pool was inaugurated on September 24, 2008 at the site of the first swimming pool. The conversion of the János Szalai swimming pool, built in 1994, was also completed that year. Also the venue for national competitions (eg VI Short Track Swimming OB).
