Texture Museum

Belgium

Texture is a museum in the Belgian city of Kortrijk that tells the evolution of flax cultivation , processing and processing into linen fabric, linked to the development of the Leie Valley in and around Kortrijk. While the nobility spent fortunes on lace and damask, basic cloth for the masses was produced in vast quantities in Kortrijk. The museum is the successor of the National Flax Museum that used to be located in Hoog Kortrijk .

The museum is located in an old warehouse for the shipment of scutched flax (the Linen Thread Company ) in the Overleie district . The building borders directly on the Leie, the so-called Golden River to which the flax industry owes its success. Due to its original function as a flax dispatch center, the building is also a direct witness to the flax industry . There are three main rooms to peruse: The Leiekamer tells you all about the flax industry and its key players in the Leie region; the hands-on Wonderkamer shows you flax’s modern applications, while the Schatkamer shows off a marvellous, precious textile collection, rich with laces and damask.

A ‘golden roof floor’ was placed on top of the building, offering a view over the city and the river Leie. The gold-colored facade cladding makes the roof refer to the Golden River .
