Théâtre National du Luxembourg (TNL)

Luxembourg

The Luxembourg National Theater was created in 1996, following the tremendous momentum generated by “Luxembourg – European City of Culture 1995”. The TNL wants to serve as a relay in the internationalization of theater in Luxembourg which by extension finds its true national identity in a European environment. A true hub between Romanesque and Germanic cultures, Luxembourg can thus become an important center of European theater. To vary Malraux’s phrase once again, we could say that the Luxembourg theater of the 21st century will be European or not! Since its creation, the TNL has not ceased to work in this direction with undeniable success which has been recognized by the national and international press,

By opening, on the one hand, a breach abroad for all Luxembourgish artists working in the theater professions and, on the other hand, by inviting internationally renowned artists to Luxembourg to involve them through co-productions, for creations from the Luxembourg scene, the TNL can serve as a showcase for all the national dramatic art.
The systematic export of quality Luxembourg productions in the field of theater and opera, and the constant concern to see Luxembourg culture shine abroad, will ensure the Luxembourg theater its survival, if not its notoriety. Faithful to its activities developed since its creation, the TNL has two vocations: to be a language and literature theater – and this in the three languages used in Luxembourg, Luxembourgish, French and German -, as well as an opera and contemporary musical creation theater, in close liaison with the various orchestras of Luxembourg. What is more, the TNL is understood as a theater of creation in general, and Luxembourg authors and composers must find in it their point of reference.
