Tom Tits Experiment is a science museum in Södertälje .
Tom Tit was a fictional character who did various scientific experiments in the French magazine l’Illustration and in several books published in the late 19th century.
Background
The Art Gallery held a science exhibition in November 1985. The model was the book “Tom Tit – La Science Amusante” [Arthur Good (1853 – 1928)] (Swedish title: Tom Tits Experiment – Vetenskapliga förströelser). The exhibition became so popular that it was decided to make it permanent. They moved into Svenska Centrifug AB ‘s old premises (the so-called Centrifuge House) near Stortorget . Today it is Sweden’s largest Science Center. Tom Tits Experiments’ mission is to arouse interest in science and technology through desire and the joy of discovery. Tom Tits Experiment is part of the Telge Group, which is owned by the municipality of Södertälje .
Activities
The museum is housed in a building, which was part of Svenska Centrifugs , later Alfa-Lavals , a factory in Södertälje, and which was in use until the mid-1960s, when production was moved to Tumba .
The museum has four floors and an experimental park. On the 1st floor, there are experiments with paints, soap bubbles, a ball track and a “lift with blocks” where you can lift yourself with your own muscle power. On the 2nd floor you get to experience a mirror maze, experiment with water, the visitor can see their own movements in a different way or “paint” with the body. Experiment plan 3 contains, among other things, the “illusion gallery” and the periodic table . On the 4th floor you can test your senses, the “helicopter” that no one has yet managed to lift with the help of muscle power alone and try an approximately 14 meter long slide that is designed as a spiral tube. The cane goes through all four floors. In the park is an industrial robotwhich is equipped with a two-seater sofa. The robot is programmed for five different rides and can handle 500 kg. In the park there is also “Självfallet” where you fall freely from a height of 15 meters. The park is open in summer.
There are a total of 450 scientific experiments in the exhibition.
Tom Tits Experiment also runs its own preschool, which opened in 2004. There is room for 60 children aged 0-6 years. The business is unique in the world by having its business directly adjacent to a science center.
