A provincial landscape is active in each province with the purchase, management and development of nature areas. Utrecht Landscape was the first of the twelve provincial Landscapes to be established in 1927. The initiators saw with great concern how many private forests and estates were sold as building sites or auctioned for high yields.
The foundation started in 1927 with eight hectares through the purchase of the Lockhorsterbos near Leusden. In 1928 the eighteenth-century country estate Over-Holland on the Vecht followed and in 1933, after difficult negotiations, the Eykensteinse Bossen (now Ridderoordse Bos) came into the possession of the foundation. The number of sites grew gradually. 1994 was a peak year, when the municipality of Zeist donated 650 hectares of woodland. Today, Utrechts Landschap manages 5,800 hectares of nature.
