Geography 

Location 

Its neighboring municipalities are Le Kremlin-Bicêtre to the north, Arcueil to the north-west, Cachan to the west, L’Haÿ-les-Roses to the south-west, Chevilly-Larue and Vitry-sur-Seine to the south-east and Ivry -on the Seine to the northeast.

Geology, relief and hydrography 

Villejuif is located at the extreme north of the Hurepoix plateau , part referred to as the Longboyau plateau , between the valleys of the Seine and the Bièvre . Most of the town (Haut-Villejuif) is located on the plateau, while another part is on the slopes, to the east and west (Bas-Villejuif).

The soil of the Villejuif plateau is made up of a marl-limestone layer ( Brie millstone ), on which a silty mantle rests , which contains a high proportion of sand. .

Transport

Villejuif is served by three stations on Paris Métro Line 7: Villejuif – Léo Lagrange, Villejuif – Paul Vaillant-Couturier, and Villejuif – Louis Aragon.

Hospitals

Villejuif is a hospital city, with three hospital centers which cover 10% of the territory of the municipality (or about fifty hectares), as well as several research units of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS).

The town is part of the scientific valley of the Bièvre , which brings together 13 towns, 2 general councils and 2 urban communities.

Villejuif has several hospitals on its territory :

  • the Institut Gustave Roussy, an oncology hospital;
  • the Hôpital Paul-Brousse;
  • the Paul Guiraud hospital.

Education

13 preschools, 11 elementary schools, and five junior high schools (Collège Aimé-Césaire, Collège Guy-Môquet, Collège Jean Lurçat, Collège Karl Marx, Collège Pasteur) are in Villejuif. Lycée intercommunal Darius-Milhaud (in Le Kremlin-Bicêtre) serves Villejuif.

Local Culture and Heritage

Places and monuments

Villejuif has many buildings and buildings that constitute its heritage, some of which are listed as historical monuments , and one is classified.

The monuments listed are:

  • The Parish Church of Saint-Cyr-St Julitta , which was built in the xiii th  century (a part of the structure of the nave dates from this time) and was rebuilt in the xv th and xvi th  centuries. An overhead passage connects it to the buildings that today house the town hall.
  • The Cassini pyramid is a geodesic target built in freestone in 1742, by the geographer Jacques Cassini . About seven meters high, it was used to measure the Paris meridian , then the speed of sound. 
  • The Hôtel de la Capitainerie des chasses ,
  • The Karl-Marx school group , the building, built in the middle of the fields, is erected as a symbol of the politics of Communist cities, with its modern equipment, its integration into the stadium and the neighboring gymnasium and its integrated furniture. 
  • The Karl-Marx stadium and gymnasium, designed as equipment for the school group, they adopt the same style (concrete, glass and metal) and the gymnasium is linked to the school by an underground tunnel. It has been partially listed since 1993.

Many other buildings constitute the heritage of the city, whether in its largely preserved historic center (rue Jean-Jaurès, Georges-Le-Bigot and René-Hamon) or in more recent constructions.

  • The Hautes-Bruyères redoubt
  • The Hospital Paul Brousse and Paul-Guiraud 

Many buildings were created in Villejuif by Paul Chemetov , in particular the nautical stadium, the media library, the theater, the Pasteur school group and housing buildings such as the Benoît-Malon trail or the Place de la Fontaine.

Natural heritage 

Villejuif is home to several parks, gardens and squares for a total surface area of ​​over thirty hectares. The Hautes-Bruyères departmental park .

  • The Hautes-Bruyères departmental park is the largest park in the city. It is the highest point of Val-de-Marne (110  m ), which dominates the valleys of the Bièvre and the Seine . 

The city also has several municipal parks:Pablo-Neruda Park (at the back, the town hall).

A hiking trail (10  km ), developed in 1994 by students of the Pasteur college in collaboration with the city and the general council, allows you to discover the city and its green spaces.

Villejuif is a city in bloom, with a flower in the competition of cities and villages in bloom.

In 2006, the Elsa-Triolet media library was opened opposite the town hall .

Sports 

Villejuif has several sports facilities and a large number of clubs.

Among these sports facilities, there are two stadiums (Gabriel-Thibault and Louis-Dolly), three sports complexes (Guy-Boniface, Maurice-Baquet, and Karl-Marx), 4 gymnasiums and several other halls ( boxing , tennis , archery …). 

The Villejuif Sports Union (US Villejuif) brings together the majority of clubs in the city, and provides them with assistance and coordination, especially for travel.

The USV covers many other team sports ( rugby , handball , football , basketball , etc.) and individuals ( boxing , fencing , gymnastics, etc.).

Each year, the city organizes the corrida des Hautes-Bruyères, a sporting event that includes several races including the 10 km event, a competition recognized by the French Athletics Federation. The bullfight closes the Days of Peace and welcomes delegations from the twin towns.
