Cultural facilities

First mentioned in 1264 in the founding act of the fortified town of Villeneuve-sur-Lot, the mill of Gajac, converted mill in the xix th  century, has a history that is intertwined with that of the city as a whole. The Gajac museum occupies the majestic site of an old mill installed by the river , right in the center of Villeneuve-sur-Lot. It houses an important collection of fine arts and organizes many temporary exhibitions.

The municipal library was created in 1860 thanks to the donation of a fund by Lamartine . From 1970, it integrated premises within the city’s cultural center and in 1978, it took the name of Paul-Guth Municipal Library . It will only be leaving its premises temporarily from July 2006 to April 2007 for renovation work which has made it possible to completely reorganize the 547  m 2 that the library occupies. The establishment’s fund currently contains more than 50,000 documents. The library actively participates in the organization of the city’s book fair and the Keskili fair, the meeting place for baby readers.

Events

  • The Villeneuve-sur-Lot laughter festival has been taking place in late June-early July since 1992 . The laughter festival is an eclectic and quality humorous program. The bastide becomes the capital of laughter and good humor at the beginning of summer.
  • The laughter festival offers, every year, a national competition of young comedians (thus went through this competition Christophe Alévèque; Baptiste Lecaplain; Titoff ….).
  • The festival offers, in the second part of the competition for young comedians, artists recognized in the one- (wo) man-show (among others, François-Xavier Demaison;); Some artists came as young comedians and then as humor stars (Bruno Salomone; Titoff ….).
  • The festival was created in 1992 by the second generation of the Association Saint-Roch Saint-Fiacre (created in 1959) in order to create a new cultural event in Villeneuve-sur-Lot
