History

Even before the Roman conquest, the territory of Villepinte seems to have been occupied by the Gallic tribe of Parisii. The origin of Villepinte must be linked to the royal abbey of Saint-Denis founded by Dagobert in 630.

In the 9th century, when Hilduin, abbot of Saint-Denis, decided to give the monks the means to meet their needs by sharing part of the abbey’s property, we find mention of Villepinte under the name “Villa Picta”. It would be the memory of a richly decorated ancient residence.

In the 17th century, a bourgeois Parisian family, the Bignon, owned a large part of the city. In 1652, they acquired a large house called the “red castle” because of its brick facade.

In the 17th century, Villepinte, which had only 260 inhabitants, was one of the many villages in Ile-de-France which supplied the capital with grain and fodder daily. Proof of intense agricultural activity: the municipal coat of arms.

Transport

Villepinte is served by three stations on Paris RER line B: Villepinte, Parc des Expositions, and Vert-Galant.
