Vitry-sur-Seine is a French commune located in the department of Val-de-Marne in the Île-de-France , about four kilometers south of Paris . Located on the left bank of the Seine , the town is crossed by the Paris – Bordeaux railway line . Weakly urbanized in the early xx th century, it experienced a population growth from the interwar period to 94 649 inhabitants in 2018 . Historically home to many careers and nurseries , including the lilac , the town was heavily industrialized during the xx th century. The town is part of the Red Belt , with a communist municipality at the head of the town since1925 . Its inhabitants are called the Vitriots.
Sights
- The Saint-Germain church. During its history, the city has known two major churches. The Church of St. Gervais – St. Protais, built in the xiii th century , is experiencing a dramatic destiny: burned by the troops of Charles II of Navarre , rebuilt at the expense of Charles V, closed to the Revolution , it was finally destroyed shortly after due to its obsolescence
- Former mansion . A mansion of the xvii th century, 1 Edouard Tremblay Street, is the subject of a registration as a historic monument since February 10 , 1962. The mansion first belonged to Pierre Lamouroux, mayor of Vitry-sur-Seine from 1825 to 1861 .
- The city applies the artistic 1% during the construction of public buildings, so more than 100 sculptures of contemporary art are located in the city, in particular in public educational establishments (schools, colleges and high schools). Works by Claude Viseux (avenue Henri-Barbusse), Pierre Székely (square de l’hloge), Louis Chavignier (Gustave-Monod college), Piotr Kowalski (place du Théâtre) or even Jean Dubuffet (place de la Release) make Vitry-sur-Seine a real museum outside the walls.
- Jean Vilar Theater . Inaugurated in 1972 , the “Théâtre Jean Vilar” owes its name to Jean Vilar actor, director, theater director, and creator of the Festival d’Avignon. Its first director was Jacques Lassalle, who later directed the Théâtre National de Strasbourg and the Comédie Française.
- The municipal gallery Jean-Collet, opened in 1982, permanently presents contemporary art exhibitions. The space of 500 m2 was organized on two levels in the old bath-showers.
- In 2009 the Exploradome moved from the Jardin d’Acclimatation to Vitry-sur-Seine. Interactive museum of science, multimedia and sustainable development, it is located on the Place du Marché near the MAC VAL. In a building with surprising architecture, the scientific discovery area invites manipulation and experimentation.
- Nelson-Mandela Library . Vitry-sur-Seine has had a municipal library since 1879 . She moved in 1990 in a former mansion located rue Edouard Tremblay and dating from the second half of the xviii th century; it is extended by a contemporary construction created by the architect Louis Soria. The facade and the roof of the mansion have been listed as historical monuments since the February 10 , 1962.
- La Briqueterie . In 2013, the Val-de-Marne Choreographic Development Center (CDC) was inaugurated in Vitry-sur-Seine on the Briqueterie.
Events
Various events take place in Vitry-sur-Seine , such as the “Spring Carnival” in May, the “Lilac Festivities” in June, the “ Christmas market ” on the mall of the Saint- Germain , the “Festival de l’Oh! »Organized by the General Council of Val-de-Marne, or the theater festival We will not go to Avignon. The Festi’val de Marne , traveling through several towns in Val-de-Marne and offering musical artists from all walks of life, a program which therefore also extends to the city of Vitry each year.
In addition, since 2009, the city has been hosting the “ Sur les pointes ” festival which takes place in the spring in the departmental park of Lilas. Recently , This festival takes place in a new place set up by Assoce Kipik and in partnership with the town hall of Vitry-Sur-Seine: the Kilowatt.
